Project Overview

This client of ours was referred to us by a local shed supplier. This client of ours wanted a shed for their motorcycle and their zero-turn mower. They were planning to add a 24’ x 28’ garage at the back of their home and needed a reliable sitework contractor to handle the installation of the gravel pad and install a gravel driveway in Churchville, New York, that connects the pad to their existing asphalt driveway.

The work required thoughtful planning and proper grading to match the layout of their current property. It’s quite similar to our Land Clearing and New 1850-ft Gravel Driveway Installation Project in Hilton, New York, where we built a long gravel driveway from scratch on raw land. The main difference here is that this Churchville property already had some development—our job was to connect new functionality to it.

And if you’re thinking of something even more heavy-duty than a shed, take a look at our Land Clearing and Concrete Garage Foundation in Ontario, New York. That project involved prepping raw land, adding a gravel driveway, and pouring a full concrete foundation to support a much heavier garage structure.

Okay, now back to the project…

How We Completed the Project

Gravel Driveway Excavation

We started by excavating and preparing the existing 2,200-square-foot area. The new driveway spans 150 feet long and varies between 12 to 14 feet in width. After excavating the topsoil and grading the surface, we installed geotextile fabric for the driveway stones.

For the new 26’ x 30’ gravel pad (780 square feet), we began by grading and leveling the ground. The pad was bordered with pressure-treated timber to keep everything in place and provide structural edge support.

Next, we delivered and applied 91 tons of Crusher Run #1 stone. These stones was graded, compacted, and rolled to a 4-inch thickness, and ensured that the surface ties in with the existing asphalt driveway.

We also installed a geotextile fabric layer underneath the base to improve stability. Then we brought in and spread 40 tons of Crusher Run #1, building the pad up to a 6–8-inch compacted thickness.

A 3-foot gravel ramp was added to the man door side for easy entry. To accommodate the client’s motorcycle and lawn mower, we extended the gravel pad:

  • A 30’ x 10’ swing area in front of the garage doors
  • A 5’ x 8’ section near the man door

Everything was carefully graded, compacted, and rolled to provide a firm foundation ready for the garage structure.

Project Insights

This project didn’t just prepare a foundation, it gave the property a big boost in functionality. The new gravel shed pad now serves as a sturdy base for the garage, giving our client a dedicated parking space for their motorcycle and a secure spot for their zero-turn lawn mower. That means no more squeezing equipment into tight corners or storing them out in the elements.

With the new gravel driveway connecting the new structure to the main asphalt driveway, our client now has an efficient access from the street to the back of the house.
