Project Overview

A kind homeowner in Spencerport, New York (Monroe County) reached out to us with a specific request: “I would like the hedge row mowed down and the pool deck removed.” They found us online while looking for a site work contractor who could take on both land clearing, demolition and lawn restoration. The client’s goal was to get rid of the thick brush growing behind their yard and tear out their old pool deck and spread topsoil with grass seeds to restore the lawn.

Here is the Existing Condition of the Property:

Deck Removal and Demolition

We started the project by taking down the existing pool deck. This included not only removing the wood structure, but also hauling away the concrete bollards and gravel blocks that had been placed around and beneath it. All materials were properly disposed of.

Topsoil Installation and Grass Seeding

Once the demolition and clearing were done, we restored the area with approximately 20 yards of triple-screened topsoil. We spread it evenly across the red-marked area — about 1,300 square feet — at an average depth of 2 to 3 inches. After raking and grading the soil for smoothness, we seeded the entire space to encourage new grass growth.

Heavy Brush and Tree Clearing

Next, we brought in our large tracked skid steer equipped with an extreme brush-clearing attachment — also known as a Fecon head. This allowed us to mulch down thick brush, trees up to 10 inches in diameter, and overgrowth right down to ground level. We focused on the back section of the yard, where the brush had taken over.

Project Insights

This backyard went through a thoughtful transformation. The homeowner wanted to restore the area where the pool and deck once stood, choosing to open up the space and create a cleaner, more usable yard.

We began by thinning out the overgrown hedge row, not removing it completely, but managing the density to improve visibility and access while still keeping some natural screening. Then, we cleared out the pool and deck structure and prepared the ground for restoration.

With new topsoil applied and grass seed spread, the area will now blend seamlessly with the rest of the lawn. It’s easier to maintain, and more importantly, it reflects how the homeowner actually wants to use their space today.
