Project Overview

A returning client from Holley, New York (Orleans County) reached out to us with a request to restore the yard over their newly installed septic and leach lines. They needed help spreading topsoil over an area roughly 50 by 70 feet at a 2-inch depth around 21 yards in total. Their goal was to get the area leveled, seeded, and looking like a healthy lawn again.

Most homeowners usually just order landscape materials like topsoil, mulch, gravel, or crushed stone from us and handle the spreading themselves. But for this project, the client wanted us to take care of the full installation from delivery to raking, leveling, and seeding. It was a great opportunity to bring everything together and deliver a clean, finished result they didn’t have to worry about.

Topsoil Installation

We supplied and applied up to 30 yards of screened topsoil at a 2-inch depth. This was slightly more than the initial 21-yard estimate to ensure full coverage and a consistent finish across the entire surface.

After spreading, we raked and graded it properly using a landscape rake attachment on the utility tractor to create a smooth, compacted surface ready for seeding.

Grass Seed and Straw Application

Once the topsoil was graded, we applied the grass seeds followed by a light straw cover. The straw helps keep moisture in, protects the seeds from wind and birds, and gives the grass a better shot at sprouting evenly and quickly. It’s a crucial step if you’re aiming for a full, lush lawn.

Project Insights

By installing a fresh layer of topsoil and applying seed and straw, the client was able to transform their septic field from a bare patch of dirt into a growing, green part of the lawn. This approach not only improves appearance but also helps prevent erosion and promotes better drainage around the system.
